Trump has done what Obama didnít: Scare NATO into closer tracking of defense spending

not that this is of much help to those of us who want NATO gone... but there are still a faint few glimmers of hope, faint few

Trump has done what Obama didnít: Scare NATO into closer tracking of defense spending

    BRUSSELS

President Donald Trump sent shock waves across Europe when he railed against the NATO alliance during his campaign and threatened not to defend those nations that hadnít paid their share of defense expenses.

He wasnít the first to raise concerns: President Barack Obama had frequently lamented NATO membersí failure to spend enough on defense.

But it was Trumpís undiplomatic rhetoric that got the issue to the top of the groupís agenda this week, when NATOís members are expected to accept the idea of public report cards to make sure everyoneís meeting the requirements of the alliance.

Obama complained three years ago at a gathering of European Union leaders that defense couldnít be left just to the United States and Great Britain. Citing Russiaís annexation of Ukraineís Crimea region, Obama said the situation ďreminds us that our freedom isnít free.Ē

Considering NATOís efforts to confront Russian aggression in Ukraine, members are particularly concerned that Trump has yet to explicitly endorse Article 5 of NATO, which is the part of the treaty that defines an attack on one member state as an attack on all.

Unlike Vice President Mike Pence and Defense Secretary James Mattis, Trump has never said heís committed to that core mission. That has some members concerned, said Thomas Wright, the director of the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

ďHe said NATOís not obsolete anymore, but when he says that, he only says that because itís fighting terrorism, not because he has endorsed its original mission,Ē Wright said. ďHe has yet to endorse its original mission. I think that might be a bit of a problem.Ē

You can easily get agreement between a pig and a cow that wolves are bad, but they can easily fall into the trap where the pig says
wolves should eat more beef, while the cow recommends a diet of pork.

Just wait until the EU tries to get Uncle Sucker to "fix" their refugee/terrorist problems....
