Meddling in internal affairs: Bahrain & Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Qatar

    Published time: 5 Jun, 2017 02:39

Bahrain announced early Monday that it is severing diplomatic relations with neighboring Qatar and cutting air and sea connections with Doha, accusing it of meddling in its internal affairs. Saudi Arabia then did the same, citing “national security.”

Bahrain’s state news agency said in a brief statement that Qatari citizens have 14 days to leave the country.

It accused Doha of supporting terrorism and meddling in Manama’s internal affairs.

You can easily get agreement between a pig and a cow that wolves are bad, but they can easily fall into the trap where the pig says
wolves should eat more beef, while the cow recommends a diet of pork.

Pass the popcorn. Qatar is home to the largest US Airbase in the Middle East. 10,000 troops there. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain accusing Qatar of being a proxy for Israel after some documents were recently leaked. I think Qatar is basically paying the price for not towing the Saudi's line against Iran.

From June 1 "Qatar 'Extends Olive Branch to Iran to Deal With Saudi Pressure'"

Qatar appears to have decided to improve its relationship with Iran in a bid to gain leverage in its relations with Saudi Arabia, political analyst Ahmet Kasim Han told Sputnik Turkey, commenting on the recent spat between Riyadh and Doha.

Relations between Riyadh and Doha had taken a major hit last week after state-run Qatari news agency QNA published controversial comments attributed to Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

News articles quoted al-Thani as saying, among other things, that Iran is an "Islamic power" that has played a positive role in stabilizing the region. In addition, the Qatari emir supposedly described relations with Israel as "good" and called Hamas the "legitimate representative of the Palestinian people," while criticizing Saudi Arabia and the United States for their policies in the Middle East.

Qatari officials later said that QNA's website and media accounts were hacked, saying that al-Thani's comments were fabricated, but some have remained unconvinced.

    A graphic: Qatar-Turkey Pipeline

I'm not too keen on the phrasing of item #7, and it's not just Clinton, it's the State Dept but there's good info here

A few weeks ago, Turkey promised to go to Qatar's aid if needed. It looks as if the Globalist may have just lost their pipeline. Hmmm

Tillerson: "Stand in unity with Israel and confront Iran""

Qatar scrambles fighter jets after Persian Gulf states, Egypt cut ties ptv.io/2Pb6

Meanwhile, a Saudi "coalition" waging a war in Yemen said it was ending Qatar's membership. The measure, it said, was due to Doha's "practices that strengthen terrorism, and its support to organizations in Yemen, including al-Qaeda and Daesh, as well as dealing with the rebel militias."

The crisis follows US President Donald Trumps visit to the region last month, marked by the signing of a $110-billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the visit was aimed at getting Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations in the region to stand in unity with Israel and confront Iran.

Tensions have escalated between Riyadh and Doha since an article appeared on Qatars state-run news agency late in May, quoting the emir as criticizing the United States, Saudi Arabia, and their client states for attempting to stir up tensions with Islamic power Iran.

A post also appeared on the agencys Twitter page, quoting the Qatari foreign minister as saying that his country was withdrawing its ambassadors from Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE amid tensions.

The Qatari government soon said the state agency had been hacked and that the remarks attributed to the emir and the foreign minister had never been made.

The official denial, which was offered several more times, nevertheless failed to stop the rift between the Persian Gulf Arab countries from widening.

Saudi media viciously attacked Qatar, accusing it of having betrayed the other Arab countries particularly at a time when they had attempted to stage a show of unity against Iran in a much-publicized and extravagant series of events in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also blocked Qatari websites and broadcasters. Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani later said the country was being targeted in a hostile media campaign, which we will confront.

Qatar may cancel 100 Boeing aircraft worth US$18.6 Bill

I think this deal may not survive:

US defence secretary visits key ally Qatar

DOHA // US defence secretary Jim Mattis met Qatars emir on Saturday during a visit to the country he said aimed to "reinforce relationships" between Doha and Washington.

    -snip-

Their talks were expected to focus on the fight against ISIL, the conflict in Syria and the regional role of Iran, which Mr Mattis has described as "destabilising".

The official Qatar News Agency said the two men "reviewed the relations between the two friendly countries in various fields, including political, strategic and military, and means to strengthening them so as to achieve more cooperation and serve the interests of both sides".

It said the talks "also covered the latest regional and international developments, mainly the Palestinian and the Syrian issues, as well as the situation in Yemen and Libya", along with "international efforts to combat terrorism, violence and extremism".

    -snip-

Washington has previously accused Doha of not doing enough to fight extremist organisations in Syria, something Qatar has denied.

The two countries have close economic ties, with national Qatari carrier Qatar Airways announcing in October the acquisition of up to 100 Boeing aircraft worth US$18.6 billion (Dh68.3bn).

Doha is also home to the largest US air base in the Middle East, which houses around 10,000 American troops.

Where did this Clinton emails graphic source from? I can't imagine that we knew #7 and did not do anything during the Benqhazi hearing? Trey Gowdy suspected this, but in order for him to press this issue he had to have the emails in his hands.

Other than that, the US is much more responsible for the creation of ISIS than anyone else and I don't understand why NO ONE will speak up about this? The MSM knew. CNN, NYT, MSNBC, Fox, all knew about the details of the gift from Qatar to CGI and to Bill himself. No one wanted to delve into what the real reasons were. We get what we deserve. All US troops spend time in Qatar for R&R during their deployment to the middle east. My son had a 6 week stay there while breaking from Afghanistan. Unfortunately, we have no means of doing anything for them until this is smoothed over.

Following Qatar affair, 'Israel is willing to cooperate with Arab countries to fight terror'

    ByGil Hoffman
    June 5, 2017 17:10

Defense Minister Liberman and other Israeli officials said that the decision to sever ties with Qatar, a strong backbone of Mideast terror, opened a world of opportunities for collaboration.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman reacted on Monday afternoon to several Middle Eastern countries' shocking decision to sever ties with Qatar, saying that it served as a great opportunity for Israel to join forces with its neighbors in the battle against Islamic terror.

    -snip-

Speaking at the Knesset, Liberman said that countries that cut ties with Qatar out of fear of radical Islamic terrorism are actually enabling Israel to reach out to them to cooperate in the fight against terror.

"I think Israel is open to cooperation," the defense minister said. "The ball is in the others' court," he continued, implying that Israel would wait for other Arab countries to reach out to it following their abrupt decision Monday.

    -snip-

"The Arab world is marching to Trump's flute, and soon Netanyahu's government will also have to justify the 3.8 billion dollars in American military aid and folow his orders," Bar Lev said. "The right-wing government is waiting in panic for the American initiative, which is the only possible diplomatic horizon. In light of Trump's initiative, it is only a matter of time before the security vacuum will end."

    -snip-

Michael Oren (Kulanu), a former Israeli ambassador to the US, said Monday that the decision of several Arab Muslim states to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar served as a "New line drawn in the Middle Eastern sand."

The American-born Israeli historian added that the move stood as a turning point in the region, in which Israel was no longer solely pitted against Arab states, but now Israel and Arabs nations alike were unified in efforts "against Qatar-financed terror."

    -snip-

Oh Good Lord, when the State Dept writes comedy, it surpasses all expectations. Qatar, Qatar, Qatar! No one else was financing or aiding terrorists. Give me a fucking break.

Why do you say 'tempest in a teapot'? I think this is huge. A full blockade of Qatar is a declaration of war according to international law. And now Israel wants to play? A first step towards larger war against Iran?

Remember the sword dance Trump did with the Saudis? Prelude to war.

If you look up the history of the Ardah, the Saudi sword dance, "Originally, the "ardah" was performed only by males of tribes of the central Nejd region before going to war": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardah

    A few notes/developments of interest

copied from an analyst I follow on twitter

    • Qatar is filthy rich and it owns half of London, Milan, Rome, Paris and it has a HUGE stake in Volkswagen. European countries will be hit.
    • Supermarket shelves in Qatar are now empty
    • Saudi Arabia closed Al Jazeera's Riyadh Office and kicked out every single employee from the building.
    • Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman: 'This is a great opportunity for Israel to isolate Qatar from other GCC countries who like us'
    • Saudi Arabia's port authority says it will not allow ships raising Qatar's flag to use the country's ports
    • SAUDI ARABIA NOW OPENLY THREATENING THE EMIR OF QATAR WITH DEATH, OVERTHROW, EXILE OR JAIL
    • There are over 200000 Egyptians working and living in Qatar at the moment, sending money back home to feed their poor families. Egypt President Al Sisi threw them all under the bus.
    • The Emirate of Dubai does not want these troubles at all. Expect tensions to rise between Abu Dhabi and Dubai very soon.
    • IRAN: GCC SANCTIONS ON QATAR ARE TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE | AL JAZEERA ENGLISH
    • Iran will send food to Qatar
    • Iran has now come forward & acts as Qatar's lifeline to the outside world. This will have BIG implications in the region and mainly in Syria
    • Iran is basically saving Qatar from total Economic collapse, but this will obviously come with a price: Qatar reaching out to President Assad
    • QATAR AIRWAYS IS USING IRANIAN AIRSPACE TO FLY TO EUROPE
    • Other Israeli source: 'Qatar is being punished by the GCC and the US for not wanting to take part in a war against Iran'
    • QATAR'S STOCK MARKET HAS SUFFERED IT'S WORST DAY IN OVER 7 YEARS. IT IS COLLAPSING. | AL JAZEERA
    • Banks in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Egypt to stop doing business with Qatar.
    • THE QATARI AIR FORCE HAS SETUP PATROLS IN ITS AIRSPACE

The Statement says a Higher Council from the #Qatar Liberation Front to run the country. The Emir of Qatar will face a trial for his crimes. & then goes on "We apologize to Egypt, Syria and all other countries affected by the terrorist policies of the ousted Qatari regime"

Erdogan won't be sleeping well tonight

Is Turkey going to jump into the Qatar crisis?

    Adam Garrie

    -snip-

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlt avuşoğlu gave a somewhat bold statement on the issue in comparison to the more nuanced ones coming from Russia, Iran and the United States. He said that the unity and togetherness of the Gulf is as important to Turkey as its own unity, a unity which one could be forgiven for saying is more fragile than that of the Gulf has generally been.

    He then stated,

Turkey, as a responsible actor in its region and as term president of the Organization of Islamic Conference, is ready to do its best for resolving this disagreement between friendly and brotherly countries as soon as possible.

In this sense Turkey has volunteered, albeit subtly to act as a mediator in the dispute, though at this point it is doubtful that two Arab kingdoms would want to take Turkey up on such an offer. If the dispute is prolonged however, this could perhaps change.

One could even imagine the US outsourcing such a responsibility to Turkey in spite of Donald Trumps frosty relationship with Turkish President Erdogan. Russia and Iran have wisely stayed well above the fray in every respect of this particular issue as of course has China.

In both Libya and Syria Turkey and Qatar are backing many of the same jihadist terrorist factions. Indeed,Qatars modest investments into Turkeys economy have expanded into funding some of the jihadist groups in Syria which are under the putative wing of Erdogan.

Qatars backing of the Muslim Brotherhood has been stressed as one of Saudis justifications for breaking off all connections with its small neighbour. However, Saudis disdain for the Brotherhood is less ideological than it is systematic and strategic.

Saudi sees the Brotherhood as better organised and older competition for influence in the theocratic political spectrum of the Sunni Arab world. Saudi as the Qatar row demonstrates, does not like any competition, in many ways Saudi hates competition more than it hates polar opposite political systems such as that of Iran. Of course the Saudis would deny this for the obvious reasons of wanting to save face. By contrast, Qatar has embraced the Brotherhood for the same reasons that Saudi shuns it. Qatar is happy to fund a group whose organisational and doctrinal structure needs no additional support from Qatarthey merely need Qatari money.

    -snip-

    http://theduran.com/is-turkey-going-...-qatar-crisis/

But Turkeys preference for Qatar over Saudi Arabia is clear. Its preference for Qatar over Egypt is likewise clear, but for subtly different reasons.

Yep. I've got a queasy feeling that this isn't going to end well.

    1st, it was Bahrain
    2nd, it was Yemen
    3rd, it is Qatar
    4th, it will be Jordan
    5th, it will be UAE
KSA wants to annex them all

This has been simmering too long. I remember reporting on their tensions 5 years ago and even then they weren't new. I fear that this is where they go in for the kill because
what broke between Saudi and Qatar can't be fixed. Either Saudi goes for the kill or Qatar will.

Houthis ready to cooperate with Qatar

Houthis ready to cooperate with Qatar

    BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:30 A.M.)

    -snip

We condemn actions against Qatar. We are ready to cooperate with Qatar as they [Qataris] are known to us as men of sincerity, loyalty, and wisdom we experienced this during Qatari mediation in the Yemeni conflict , Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, the head of the Revolutionary Committees of the Houthis, tweeted Monday.

Mohammed Abdul- Salam, head the Houthi delegation to Kuwait, and official spokesperson of Houthis movement said on his Facebook page:The Saudi and Emirati regimes are seeking to extract the Qatari decision in a manner that favors their brutality and imaginary attempt to extract the national decision of the Yemenis, which they have been unable to do thus far.

The Qatari regime attempted to mediate a peaceful settlement in Yemen between the Houthis and government of Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2004.

How hard is it to learn Russian? Their spooks are looking so much more effective than ours, I might consider joining Snowden. Wonder what their medical system looks like. I have heard prices are reasonable on the Russian Riviera.
